MOSFETs – Function and Applications
MOSFETs (Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistors) are special transistors that are voltage-controlled and characterized by low on-state resistance (R_DS(on)). They are ideal for high-performance and efficient switching applications.
Applications of MOSFETs:
- Power control – In switching power supplies, DC/DC converters, and motor controllers.
- High-frequency circuits – Used in amplifiers and high-speed switches.
- Switching applications in microcontrollers – Control of LEDs, relays, and other loads.
There are two main types: N-channel MOSFETs (common for switching applications) and P-channel MOSFETs (for specialized controls). They offer high switching speed and efficiency.
